Mt Colah U14 Girls v West Pymble U14 Girls

Foxglove Oval, Mt Colah

Final Score: Mount Colah 0-0 West Pymble

Player of the Match – Erin

Sas, Gabby & Elyse: Strength in numbers

Mothers Day - time for all Mums to have a lie-in, relax and put their feet up for a while… or in the case of the Mt Colah GU14 Mums, time to drive the girls to the game, set up the chairs and relax on the sidelines ready to watch a great game of football. Today’s game was against West Pymble; the first time that we’d played them this season. With the sun shining down at Foxglove, the Mums seated and being fed choccies and cakes, and the girls ready and warmed up, the whistle blew and the game began.

Moni, Gabby and Sal started off well in the early minutes, pushing up forward quickly after kick off, but West Pymble pushed back too, quickly showing that the game would be no pushover to win. Erin was forced to sprint back and defend early on when one of the West Pymble forwards made a run down the left wing before possession was reclaimed by Mt Colah. This led in turn to Moni making a lovely run up from midfield, putting in a cross that Sas struck just wide of the goal. Minutes later, Elyse had a shot too, but it was saved by West Pymble’s excellent goalie, who it had to be said, was kept pretty busy throughout the game, and done her task well.

Karissa was also busy at the other end, saving a shot that had rebounded back from Sal’s excellent defensive header. Most of the rest of the first half was fairly evenly matched, with West Pymble maybe just having the edge on possession. Karissa was forced to make a few more saves and Erin, Jess and Shannon were kept pretty busy at the back trying to keep a clean sheet. Rachael and Sal both managed to squeeze off shots at the other end but both were saved by the aforementioned West Pymble goalie. Just before half-time, the Mt Colah Mums held their collective breath as one of the West Pymble forwards managed to evade everyone  and put herself one on one with Karissa but the latter kept her nerve and made a fine save to keep the scores level at 0:0 at the halftime whistle.

Sal tries some fancy footwork

Ten minutes later, and with the girls energised by their halftime oranges and special Mum’s Day Lamingtons, the second half got underway. Rachael got into the action early by unleashing a powerful shot that went just wide of the mark - Moni tried to get on the end of it too, but just missed connecting by inches. That was enough to scare West Pymble into action though and they swiftly launched a counter-attack, making several runs on goal and dominating possession for a while. It was during this time that one of the game’s highlights occurred: the West Pymble No.5 made a determined run down the left wing with Jess in hot pursuit, both of them running half the length of the field with the attacker dodging, weaving and feinting in an effort to get free, but to no avail – Jess got her eventually, skillfully regaining possession and clearing the ball back down the field, to much applause and admiration from the sidelines. 10/10 for effort, Jess!

The rest of the half continued in the same vein - West Pymble certainly had their share of possession, but both sides’ goalkeepers and back line were too strong for anything to slip through, despite all the players’ best efforts. Erin performed ceaselessly at back as sweeper and Gabby, Sal and Jae chased the ball endlessly, tying to be everywhere at once, and for the most part, succeeding. There were some close shots at each end towards the end of the half as the clock ticked down, but a goal was not forthcoming for anyone today, and the final whistle blew on a 0:0 scoreline for two extremely well matched teams. No goal for Mothers Day then, but nobody could dispute the amount of effort put in trying for one. Well done Mt Colah!
