on a Lindfield player

And so to Round 2 of the season, where the Under 14 girls were home at Foxglove to Lindfield C. With Eliza as Captain, and Pirate Paul doing his best to keep an 'eye' on things, the girls kicked off the first half, albeit without Erin, Rachael and Tess, who were all unavailable for today's game.

However any thoughts that Lindfield may have had that they were up for an easy victory against an underpowered Mt Colah team were quickly dashed in just the 2nd minute of the half, when Sas sent a shot across the goal mouth that just missed, but was brought back into play by Eliza, who then calmly put it in the back of the net. 1-0 to Mt Colah in the opening minutes.

Eliza on her way to a hat-trick
Not so fast, it's MY ball!

Lindfield swiftly came back for a counter-attack after the restart, but were unable to get past Jess, who was doing a fantastic job as lone sweeper at the back, making numerous clearances to thwart their attempts. Minutes later, the action was back at the other end of the pitch and after a lovely corner by Eliza that just failed to connect with everyone, Elyse managed to regain possession and shoot it past the Lindfield goalie for the second... 2-0! Sas and Elyse then tried to make it 3-0 a few minutes later, forging a lovely partnership through the left wing and centre, but the Lindfield defenders weren't having it, and cleared the ball back towards our goal where it was met by Shannon, Sal and Jess, who defended furiously. A few shots did manage to slip through to Karissa, but the first was an easy save for her and the second went wide. Lindfield certainly weren't giving up, but neither were the Mt Colah girls, and after some determined footwork and pressure by Sal and Eliza, the latter took possession in the Lindfield half and unleashed a cracker of a shot to make it 3-0

The visitors did try to put together a few attempts to draw a goal back in the last ten minutes of the first half; in particular, Zoe, their best striker, made several runs on goal and sorely tested our defences, but Gabby and Jess held strong and kept her closely marked to deny her any goalscoring opportunities. To finish the half off, Moni and Gabby both had a shot on goal in the last few minutes, but both went wide. Half time score: 3-0.

The second half started off with Karissa switched to play left midfield, and Shannon putting on the goalie’s gloves. The girls pushed up early in the first few minutes, with Jae having a good shot that just went wide of the post, courtesy of a lovely through ball from Eliza in midfield. Ten minutes and 4 corners later, the pressure was still on and keeping the Lindfield backline busy. Sas managed to get a shot past them that was gathered by the goalie at the last minute, but it was Elyse‘s throw in to Eliza that hit the mark, with the Mt Colah captain putting it past the goalie for her hat-trick and Mt Colah’s 4th.

Not to be left out, Saskia made it 5-0 a few minutes later, and Elyse managed to connect with a beautiful corner by Gabby to send the ball into the roof of the net to make it 6-0 just three minutes after - the Mt Colah girls were fired up! Lindfield vainly tried to push back, but it was to no avail as Ally and Karissa joined Sas and Eliza in pushing forward, and Gabby trying to get her own hat-trick with a couple of cracking shots, one of which sailed over the bar and nearly made the next suburb.

However, it was Karissa that wanted the action, and after one shot went just wide, she tried again and the second was bang on target, making it 7-0 before Ally joined in the party with a lovely goal to make it 8! Thankfully for Lindfield, the final whistle blew seconds later before the score had a chance to progress to double figures. A fine win by the Mt Colah girls, and a reminder to the other teams in the league of what they can do even when missing 3 of their players!
