2009 Golf Day
Another magnificent day greeted the combatants of the 2nd annual Mount Colah Football Club Golf Championship, held again at "Royal" North Turramurra Golf Course.
With 17 new players making up the field of 31, the early start (maybe a bit too early for one as he struggled to make the first tee on time) again proved to be a winner as the temperature climbed steadily during the morning. Speaking of the new players, a couple of them, like our club secretary and his wife, don't own clubs so had to hire them, proving their dedication to club events.
Play got under way on time with young Brock Barnes, from the U15's, striking the first blow and setting a precedent, with a super shot down the fairway, leaving a few to curse him as it really put the pressure on them to lift their game from the start. Defending Champion Rob Cox was in the "poop" before he had played a shot. Bringing his father along to get him out of the house whilst family members prepared for his surprise 70th birthday celebrations, Richard was under the impression the Rob had booked a cart and therefore didn't bring his electric buggy, so "I'll have yours, son"…guess who ended up CARRYING his bag around??
Out on the course all was fairly calm as the players enjoyed the conditions and the company. There was the usual "ball striking tall timber" and the odd "where the hell did that go?" but otherwise there was not much shenanigans going on…oh…apart from some of the All Age newbie's who played a majority of the round off the red ladies tees!! Skirts at ten paces next time gir…I mean lads!
After the round the players headed off to Berry Park for the BBQ and Presentation. Thanks to Helmut and Steve for manning the BBQ, whilst J.B. was busy tallying the score cards, ably assisted by Brock, to sort out who had won what.
Unfortunately a few couldn't make it back to the "presentation shindig" (their prizes can be claimed when they attend the AGM in a couple of weeks), including defending champion Rob Cox who, with a nett 67 (74 off the stick), again took out the top prize. He was whining that his wrist was sore and after 3 holes was seven over par…looks like it came good for the next 15 holes…might try that one myself next year.
Runners up laurels went to David O'Keefe, making his debut, with a nett 68, despite his battle to get out of bed this morning. Third place was narrowly won by, as he did last year, Peter Verduin with a nett 69 on a count back from Mt Colah's "newest recruit", Nick Ward who took out the "Best of the Rest" trophy, coming home in fourth. Scratch was won by John Barnes with a scintillating (author's poetic license) 80 off the stick. Best 1st Nine went to Mick Larymore with a net 31and Best 2nd nine was taken out by Greg McKinnon with a nett 33.5. Nearest the Pin on the 4th was won by Graeme Murray, knocking off a desperately unlucky John Barnes, who in turn had knocked off an even more unlucky Brock Barnes. On the 11th Peter Verduin put his shot on the green for yet another prize. Incidentally, how about that pin placement there….right on the peak of Mt Everest!! Long Drive on the 17th was won by Rob Cox who narrowly beat Vincent Turner, by a meter or so...a couple of big hits. Nathan Macri was awarded the N.A.G.A. (Not A Golfers Ar…Armpit) trophy. Nathan was bemused by the meaning of it and when it was explained I still don't think he got it. Some things are just lost on the new generations coming through. A marked improvement of players scores (or should that be scoring methods!!) saw the Bradman tumble to a 126 compared to last years 179, Leigh Nicholls taking home the spoils there. Finally, Debbie Vanny was thanked for coming.
Another great day so thank you to all for your participation and to those that helped out. We look forward an even bigger event next year.
Cheers
JB
